Cheating and Plagiarism
Cheating is defined as copying another’s homework, presenting someone else’s work as your own, or using unauthorized assistance on tests or quizzes. Plagiarism is copying from any publication without documenting the source. If a student willingly allows another student to copy his or her work, that student is guilty of wrongdoing and will receive a zero for the material copied.
Each incident of cheating and each incident of plagiarism is tracked during the time the student is in junior high school. Once he or she moves into senior high school, the old record is removed and the person begins the freshman year with a “clean slate”. Any act of cheating or plagiarism committed during these years is also recorded by the counselor. Both the junior and senior high school records are kept in the counseling office and do not appear in the student’s curriculum folder or on any transcripts.
If it is determined that a student has cheated or plagiarized, the following actions will be taken:
1. A first offense:
a. The student will receive a zero on the assignment.
b. The principal will be notified, and a conference will be held with the student,
and the parents will be contacted.
c. If the student holds any leadership position in a club, class, or athletic team,
the student may lose the position.
2. A second offense will be considered a Category II offense and handled in accordance
with section 4.048-1. The student will fail the quarter with a maximum grade of 64
percent or the actual calculated grade whichever is less when the offense occurred.
3. A third offense will be considered a Category III offense and handled in accordance
with section 4.048-1. In the event the student is not expelled, the student will fail the
semester in the class in which the offense occurred.
***If the plagiarism occurred by lack of proper citations and appears to be the result of sloppy work habits, a first offense will result in a warning being issued. A second offense will result in the student being disciplined as if it were a first offense of cheating or plagiarism.
